Trail difficulty: EE
Trails used: 19C – 22 – 22B – 23B
Hiking time: 6:30h
The route starts from Pila Gorraz (upper square) heading towards the Grimondet mountain pasture, along trail 22B, following a dirt track that initially runs through the woods, with an elevation gain of around 200 metres over a distance of just under 3 km. You then continue along the farm track, passing the vast mountain pasture towards the Liouteysa mountain pasture.
From the old mountain pasture, on the right, take the signposted path 23B towards Punta de la Pierre (2550 m), which can be reached in about 4 hours from the start. The route alternates between shaded sections in the woods and sunny meadow sections, with a gradually steeper ascent.
From the summit, continue along an easy, panoramic ridge heading west, following path 22 until you reach Punta Drinc (2,663 m). You then continue along the ridge to the Arno Bivouac (2,662 m) and on to Platta de Grevon (2,752 m), where you’ll find the ‘Stella di Pila’ restaurant, with a panoramic terrace and the chance to sample typical Aosta Valley food and wine.
The traverse is well under way but not yet complete: continue along Trail 22 to Punta Tsa Sèche (2,827 m). This section is more challenging and is suitable for experienced hikers, due to the scree-covered terrain and some sections over loose rock.
You then descend gently towards Colle Tsa Sèche (2,815 m). From the pass, follow the well-marked path past the mountain pasture, then take path 19C and walk alongside the lake. Continuing once more along path 22, partly through woodland, you return to Pila.
In terms of time, the walk from Punta de la Pierre to Col Tsa Sèche takes around 3 hours, whilst the walk from the pass to Pila takes around 1½ to 2 hours.
Points of interest: Gorraz, Grimondet mountain pasture, Alpe Liouteysa, Punta de la Pierre, Punta del Drinc, Arno bivouac, Platta de Grevon, Stella di Pila, Punta Tsa Sèche.
