Loop itinerary starting from the center of Pila that allows you to reach some of the most iconic viewpoints in the area, from which you can admire Lake Chamolè, Lake Arbolle with a view of Monte Emilius, the view of the city of Aosta, and the highest glaciers in Europe.
To gain elevation, take the Chamolé chairlift, which directly reaches an altitude of 2300 meters. From here, follow the Marmots trail, a rocky path protected by wooden railings. It starts steep and then becomes more level, with benches along the way for resting and enjoying the views.
In about 15 minutes, you’ll reach the first stop, Lake Chamolé.
A small elevation on the left provides the perfect spot to admire the lake. From here, turn right at the only intersection to take trail 102. The path climbs steeper but doesn’t pose technical difficulties. Along the way, you can enjoy panoramic views of the lake. About halfway up, a prominent rock is perfect for a short break if fatigue sets in.
The time to reach the top of the ascent is approximately 1:15h. Once you reach the highest point, the panorama opens up to Lake Arbolle and Mount Emilius behind it. It’s an unmissable opportunity to take some photos from this viewpoint. The path continues along a steep descent, where ropes are essential for assistance. In a short time, you’ll arrive at the Arbolle Refuge, where you can use the refuge’s facilities and replenish water from the fountain outside the structure. You can choose to stay overnight or enjoy a typical mountain lunch at the refuge.
Returning along the same descent route requires attention to the steep section flanked by ropes, this time ascended. After reaching the col, descend to the intersection of the Chamolé Lake trails, where you turn left to re-enter the last stretch of the Marmots trail and take the chairlift again.
Alternatively, for the return on foot to the starting point, once back at Lake Chamolé, you can continue north on trail 102, which will lead you to the Hermitage of San Grato passing through Alpe Chamolé. On the descending path, you may encounter squirrels or beautiful mountain flowers, surrounded by juniper bushes recognizable by their typical blue berries. Upon reaching Alpe Chamolé at an altitude of 2150 meters, the valley opens up again, and we recommend a stop at the fountain before starting the return to Pila. If the timing is right, you might encounter grazing herds near the stable and observe numerous marmots residing in the surrounding meadows. After Alpe Chamolé, continue on trail 102 to the Hermitage of San Grato. From the Hermitage, a flat walk on the left of the church takes you to the center of Pila in 25 minutes.
